Auschwitz Museum is an area of 191 hectares, which is a quite big size. What’s more, the two parts of the camp, Auschwitz I and Auschwitz II Birkenau are 3 km away from each other. Finding Auschwitz entrances may be difficult, so we have prepared the full explanation on how to find it.

Auschwitz entrances location

Auschwitz I is the main starting point of dozens of history tours conducted every day. This is also where you can buy or redeem your tickets. It features some of the most important exhibitions of the complex, including the infamous “Arbeit Macht Frei” sign.

Auschwitz II-Birkenau is the home of the Auschwitz Memorial and the second part of your guided tour. It’s located about 3 km (or a 7 minute drive) away from Auschwitz I.

Entrances to Auschwitz-Birkenau Museum

In order to enter the Auschwitz Museum tourists must go through the Visitor Services Center located at 55 Więźniów Oświęcimia Street. Before the tour starts, the guide will give you a short introduction of the tour, as well as a set of rules you must follow. After crossing the ticket zone, you’ll get to see the real main entrance to the Nazi concentration camp. It is well known due to the “Arbeit Macht Frei” sign, which means “Work will set you free”. This entrance is one of the first stops during the tour.
 
In Birkenau the notorious train ramp is also the actual entrance. You’ll be able to see the train gate all the way from the parking lot at which you’ll be dropped off. It’s well-known from the photographs, which presents railroad tracks leading to the ramp inside the camp.
Bear in mind not to lose your tickets, as you’ll need to show them again while visiting Auschwitz II.

Entrance for people with disabilities

For wheelchair users

It is possible to rent a wheelchair before the tour. However, not every part of the camp is accessible due to the character of barracks construction, where some exhibitions are displayed. The surface may also be challenging as it is a mix of mostly uneven brick paving and rocky gravel. Taking another person for mobility assistance may be beneficial for you visit to Auschwitz-Birkenau. There are parking spaces for people with disabilities if you wish to use them.

In Auschwitz II-Birkenau there are no stairs or other level difference, so it enables everyone to see the camp.

For people who are hard of sight or hearing

The Museum has guides written in Braille (Polish) in its possession. You can also enter the premises with a guide or service dog with no restrictions. An appropriate certificate and a vaccination record must be presented during entry.

The average wait time at the Auschwitz entrance depends on the time and season. During holiday it is approximately 1 hour, during the rest of the year it takes around 15 minutes.

The first hour after the openning the museum and the last hour before closing the museum are the less crowded.
